Come fly with us at the Otaki Kite Festival held annually at our stunning Otaki Beach on the Kapiti Coast, just one hour’s drive north of Wellington. 2018 will be the 6th kite festival presented by the Otaki Promotions Group Inc.

Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 February 2018 – kites flying 10am-4pm (weather/wind dependent) plus on-stage entertainment until 5pm

Fun for all the family, this free event brings together NZKA kite flyers from around New Zealand, including the world famous Peter Lynn Kites of Ashburton. plus international guest kite flyers from Australia, Malaysia and Germany to showcase their artistry, design and flying skills. Previous festivals have seen an audience of up to 18,000 over the two days enjoying a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
Spectacular kites of all shapes, sizes and styles thrill those viewing from the beach, above the dunes and the Pavilion roof. Expect to be delighted by the sight of massive inflatable kites, stained glass window and bug kites through to tiny fluttering seagull kites.

Festival food & drink, markets stalls plus kids' entertainment

Visit our food and drink vendors located around the site and browse the market stalls to find something special to take home! Be sure to look out for the kiddies’ entertainment area too, including bouncy castle and merry-go-round.

Entertainment

We’re well known for entertaining our visitors both on and off the beach at the Otaki Kite Festival.  All entertainment and activities are weather dependent and may vary accordingly.  Check our Facebook page as well for updates.

ON THE BEACH

We have an impressive lineup of international kite flyers in 2018. Regular guest Tony Rice of Queensland returns, along with Robert Brasington of Tasmania. Karin Gurezka is bringing kites from Germany, and Nasri and Bohari will have their spectacular inflatable kites. They will join our own New Zealand flyers who bring their own impressive array of kites, including the world-famous Peter Lynne Kites of Ashburton.

Along with the spectacular event and inflatable kites flying, the Phoenix Kite Collective from Queensland are performing with their stunt kites. In three performances each day, the Phoenix flyers dip and dive to music and commentary. There's also the annual Rokkaku kite fighting challenge. The Rokkaku is a multi-round inter-business battle in the sky with Kapiti Mayor Guru participating this year. The last remaining kite flying earns the highest points. As well, there may be periodic stunt kite flying demonstrations.

For the kids there are kite buggy rides from in front of the surf club along the beach towards the Waitohu Stream (weather dependent). The Harcourts Big Dig will be happening on both Saturday and Sunday this year from 10.30am-11.30am.

Otaki Surf Life Saving Club will also share some of their on-water rescue practices over the weekend, too.

ON STAGE
On stage, professional band We Came to Play will be performing throughout the day, with a rocking finale from 4pm-5pm when the kites come down. Local singer Tui-Eilish Tahere-Katene is doing a one-off performance at 11.45am on the Saturday, and the Mukume Taiko Drummers return for more thrilling performances on the Pavilion Lawn.
